The only thing I can think of about 90 degree rotation is that if you do that to letter Z it becomes N, and a Z would become N.

Also C U and H I but whether any of these crops up only time will tell. After an hour I've got only 6 words.

This is tough. I have got three Z to N rotations and three M to E which is a bit of a stretch of the imagination. I am struggling with columns 12 and 13 though.

I've been working all day and still am, so I've only allowed myself half an hour or so on this one. However, I've just had a thought about the darkened cells and the red cells. Look away now if you don't want to hear it.

Could the darkened cells form a graphic of the Independent's eagle, and the red cells be the symbol of the 'I' where the puzzle wil begin its new life?

No Eagle, but some of the most obscure names I have come across in any crosswords, including a dead Burmese General, a race of Siberian reindeer herdsmen and a Mexican native.
Very clever construction but fiendishly difficult IMHO.

Thanks kobnut for stopping me going down that blind alley.

A missed opportunity here. Faithful Inquisitor solvers are delighted that it continues, but no effort has been made to bring in new solvers from readers of the i. An explanation of the conventions of the instructions would have been a good start.

Having guessed what the instructions might mean I tried the clues and could not get beyond 1 across possibly beginning "The"! On looking at previous Inquisitors on fifteensquared I confirmed my conclusion of many years ago, that this kind of puzzle relies on perverse cluing of absurdly obscure words.

Disappointing.

Hi,

The name of the paper fills the 11 central cells of column 1.Then you have to do a few rotations to get many of the across answers.
I have made some headway with this but as I suspect, and as Kobnut has confirmed, there are some obscure answers !
