Demeter - look again at your answer to 10. Does it have an R in it? It shouldn't.

I had DATELESS but cannot explain it.
You have Look up 10 down in Chambers and you will finda spelling with L instead of R. It actually is the L for line in the clue with AB for sailor and NUT for mast. Thanks

Thanks mt49er, that was the error. Just shows the danger of failing to parse the clues properly.

ionacarr,

For 34, first you have to remove 'babas' from 4 down, change it to babes, insert it after 'rival' in 34, and then removing the letters of 'barbie' from the anagrammed rival babes gives the answer.

15 is quite sneaky. As you say, the first 2 letters are the state, and then the other 3 are the following answer (to 16 ac), hence the dots.

Thanks Demeter - I was just about to post saying I'd spotted the comp. anag., but the logic of 15 would never have occurred to me.

So that just leaves 29. I'm also not entirely sure how the 'loosely thematic' words line up. Some equate to 'died', others to 'lost animation' (OK, fair enough), others to 'ghosts' - with one describing their activities. But where does 42 fit in? And 15, 16, 17 and 22 seem just to signify degrees of emphasis. I can't relate these last five to the ludicrous Plot.

Ionacarr, this is just to say that the answer to 19ac is in Chambers as a subsidiary entry in the 3rd definition of the first 3 letters of the answer. It took me a while to find it and I'm still struggling with 3 of the food items. Strangely the word removed from 32ac is in Chambers as a reference to another entry, which is not there!

Thanks, Barretter. They usually put words like 19ac in as head-words with a cross-reference if their location might not easily be spotted (as it wasn't in my case). As for 32ac, this has happened many times since the editors felt bound to recommend Chambers 2014. You'll find it in the much more useful 2011 edition.

For those so inclined, I recommend the app to avoid edition discrepancies.
