Happy about that but sad that I still haven't completed the bottom right-hand corner. Any hints for 37ac ,42ac, 37dn and 34dn most welcome.

Barrett

Both the last 3 letters and first three letters of 1ac and 42 a are a number and are written in as such.

Thanks very much Djawfulc : I thought 34dn might be that but the "i" at the end of 37 across seems impossible ; and I don't see how the "small vehicle fits between "can t.........oast" and makes sense. I'll keep trying.

I see how the Omar Khayyam word fits now but I am still puzzled by the "single-chairer".

Yes, I know what it is ("single-chairer" was my clumsy paraphrase), but I don't see how it fits between "t" and "oast" as the third "e" should be an "a", surely ; and 24 down has to end in "e".

Is the implication that the third "e" should be capitalized and stand for "English"? [The "last" in the clue seems wrong as well, but I'll try to ignore that].
