I have a word which means to sketch desultorily but I'm struggling to find the answers to the down clues which descend from it ; in fact, with the whole righthand side apart from 24 and 25 down : la lotta continua!
Barretter, 7 is an old word for harmony, rest is an anagram; 8 is an obsolete term for magistrate, 9 - if you're a waste layer, I suppose that means that you lay waste, 10, the definition is 'footy' as in 'of the foot'.
I've now got 7dn which is an anagram of A (for American) and IDEAS plus the missing P and it's one of those Edmund Spenser misspellings so beloved of cryptic crossword setters for a word meaning harmony.
Say not the struggle nought availeth
I think 38 must be SLEEST but the spelling isn't confirmed in Chambers. I just need to complete 11, 14 and 32 - any ideas? I thought the entry at 15 was inspired!
in 11ac the answer completes the name of Pygmalion's statue inside "gain". 14 provides the name of a sort of drug addict inside "nooner". I have the only possible answer to 32ac but I have yet to insert it correctly. Still puzzled by 42 across an the central column. I presume you have to insert numbers at certain points.
