Good fun, with an amusing PDM ... but the final step completely eludes me. The 2-cell thematic entries have me pondering. The outer cells (checked) are obvious, but what remains seems far from uniquely defined. Do these two entries undergo the same thematic treatment as all the others (as the Preamble implies)? If so do we have to squeeze several letters in? Surely not. Help appreciated.

It's one character to a cell, and I agree with your reading of the preamble. And it's a phrase you'll definitely recognise! Might be worth guessing options for the first word based on the theme you've uncovered...

You've given yourself a clue in your first sentence, cockie. The two-cell entries relate to an anniversary.

The position of the break in 38 still eludes me.

It goes in the bit after

Can t ????????? Oast

It is a type of small vehicle and it makes the sentence refer to the Chinese eating a traditional British dish

I started this really quickly but have ground to a halt. I have an answer for 38a but cannot find it in the dictionary.
