I'm down to the last two after a real battle! Please give me a hint for 12dn and 21ac. Both are coded - the nearest I can get with 12dn is tramcars but I am not happy with it. Many thanks as always.

Yes, unclued, TRAMCARS is correct: 'short race' = RAC (a bit uninspiring), which goes inside SMART ('quick'). Then you have to 'review' the whole thing, an uncommon but allowable indicator of reversal.

Can't help with 21ac though. It's my last unsolved clue, and the range of the three cross-checked coded letters is too wide to allow working backwards to arrive at the clue answer. Will someone please give a hint? Actually, will someone just spell it out?

Thanks, Meursault. I'd never have worked that out for myself. I'd got bogged down by a fixation on QUAR (quarto = four leaves!). In any case, the four-word definition of JUG was obscure enough to render Bradford's of no use.

I still don't understand the wordplay for JUGA.

It's justified in Chambers: look at the definition of JUG as a verb! The final A is a common abbreviation. The extra word is 'olive'. Finally, look at JUGUM for an explanation of the definition.

Thanks IonaCarr.

Yes, worked out the JUGUM bit, but missed that obscure use of 'jug' as a verb.

Hi

Where is the C to be entered at the front of a word as a misprint?

Or am I wrong again?

Thanks
