meursault

Another theme previously featured in the Listener. I assume that the 6-letter word sent in a deceptive message is to be found in the 3rd row from the bottom. There surely were thousands of deceptive messages sent, containing hundreds of 6-letter words, none of which were directly related to the theme...

Good of you to give away the game without any prompting.

It was a poorly phrased question. Can you confirm that the 6-letter word is in the 3rd row from the bottom ?

Don't try to be disingenuous, Meursault. Time and again you leap in unprompted with "questions" along the lines of "please confirm I am right". This spoils it or others coming here genuinely looking for help. It is also exactly the sort of smugness you so aggressively charged Answerbank contributors of showing when you arrived here with a fanfare. Yes, we know you are supremely clever, but please ask only genuine questions.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

I have to leap to the defence of Meursault here, and I intend to explain why. I suspect there will be many who agree with me.

The Answerbank is a c_c_-measuring forum for those who are not satisfied with being aware of their aptitude, but who enjoy talking about it.

I have no problem with that, but in the rather difficult transition from standard cryptics to specialist crosswords in recent years, it had nothing to offer.

However, I sat in this forum silently for many months before feeling confident enough to contribute, and I learned and benefitted from the more relaxed approach to sharing.

There are no spoilers here, because we can choose to be here or not. This forum is for spoilers, and if that encourages more people to share our elitist pursuit, then I'm in favour of it.

Of course there are personalities in here, just as in the real world. And we accept them and live with them and enjoy them just as we do in wider society.

So please, ease up on the criticism. If you don't want spoilers - go to the Answerbank and get your affirmation fix; but me, I'm happy sharing. I only come here either when I've hit a brick wall, or when I've finished.

(Actually the latter hasn't happened yet, but when it does I'll be here)

A year ago I was lucky to get one or two answers. Now I regularly finish (with only occasional help in here) - keep the faith!

22d. Four letter verb meaning 'judge', taken in by two letter Scots word meaning 'one' and finished off with an abbreviation of 'daughter'. It means loss of a bequest,

If this doesn't help - knock again
