QC inside an anagram of gale. The whole thing means "was penetrating". Think about a sword. Don't forget the third and sixth letters are misprints.

I think any crossword solving has increased enjoyment when done with a friend. Of course there is huge satisfaction if you do it unaided but the Listener requires a certain sort of friend. I am hugely grateful to friends on this site who have given helpful nudges in the past.

I think I have completed this puzzled unaided but I am baffled by the showing girl gang unbelted bit. Could someone help me - subtly! I have rearranged the three jumbles and am pleased to see real words are retained.

Thanks for your helpful comment, Saddleworthian. It's worth saying a couple more things.

I find wordsearches mind-numbingly boring, consequently I don't spend a lot of time on them. So, frequently, though I may have spotted one answer that perhaps fits the bill, I'm not confident that it's either the only answer, or the 'right' answer.

In this instance, the setter gave no indication as to whether the 6-letter word was in contiguous cells, in a straight line, in the shape of a letter, or scattered all over the grid.

Considering all the deceptive messages sent out, it's equally plausible that the hidden word might be 'Athens', 'Narvik', 'Ostend', rocket, 'Rostov', 'Sicily', 'Tromso'...

The complainants don't number among the more frequent contributors on this site. I suspect that they are usually found on another site and have crossed over in order to stir up trouble.

Getting closer now but still a bit stuck because I keep forgetting about the misprints. Hints for 15 across and 9 across would be much appreciated. I'm glad I signed in this time, it's great to see a nearly completed grid when I had no clue at the beginning. Thanks for all the help

Mandyrob, 15 is a strange word of latinized greek, its singular ends -um but the plural ends -ums, which is quite unusual. The definition is 'upper surfaces' (of a bird's body), the wordplay involves an anagram of womans with ex included, though 2 letters change.

9 is a scottish word for female fishes. Think crustaceans.

Mandyrob, 9ac is a famous area in London associated with Leicester but entered backward and without its last letter. As it crosses an unclued entry one of its letters has to be changed according to the cipher to give the Scottish word.
I am still baffled by the phrase in brackets and am still missing four letters in the amended grid which are part of 33dn and 39ac. Any hints about those two clues would be most appreciated.I have *er* for 33dn.
