I take your point, Barretter : knowledge of the theme created a closed loop and the effect on the enemy of any signal was measurable. But if I suggested that my ability to hear was related to the act of someone coughing, I think most people would say, "Well, not really..."

I echo Kirky's comment. i'm truly grateful for the hints which I wouldn't have needed 30 years ago, but which with my ailing solving powers enable me to keep up to the end most weeks.

I found this quite a chewy puzzle, perhaps because I worked out the message and resolved the three jumbled words before I'd solved all the clues. As a result there are two clues in the SE corner I can't solve and so can't confirm the words to enter in the final grid. Help or a hint please!
