Ah yes, thank you, of course it is! Easy when you know how; impossible if you don't.

But one other thing: where does 'marriage' come into 8?

That was very difficult for the likes of me. Add me to those not getting the dotty ambiguity.

The reference to marriage in 8d is puzzling. My understanding is that Persephone was the protector of marriage, but I hesitate to suggest an error, since whenever I've suggested a mistake in cluing it has transpired that the only mistaken person was myself.

I just put the answer followed by protector of marriage in google and the first hit gave it me. However, I am completely bamboozled by this xword, as I haven't a clue as to what is going on!!!

Thanks to gitto and gem94 for the google tip. That does seem to justify the answer, but it's remarkable (= suspicious, to me at any rate) that so many of the resulting hits use exactly the same words. I don't doubt the accuracy of the definition in this case, but, in general, the internet is an excellent device for promoting and perpetuating nonsense. I tried once to correct the rubbish in the Wikipedia entry for 'taghairm', and received all sorts of threats and accusations of vandalism.

I have everything now except 13d and 31a: hints of any kind would be most welcome.

13d: the partial def is 'teaching' and the key cryptic elements are 'pollsters', 'working' and 'lock';
31; this held me up for ages, but there are several variations of a word beginning with N that should eventually lead you to the answer.

Thanks to those who sorted out the 'marriage' problem. I wouldn't have thought of using the method recommended. But if the clue is so unambiguous, why does it need to end with a question mark?

In 31ac the definition is "display of dancing girls" and the wordplay is an ancient word for "rump" in the plural minus an "e" (for "eroticism") and minus the "s" which is part of the second quotation. The dancing girls are Indian and you may be more familiar with the word with a "u" in it. I am still struggling with 13dn, not to , mention 8d, 18ac, 16dn, 32ac, 29dn, etc., etc.!
