Ah, thanks Barretter. Hadn't noticed the significance of the title. I suppose that the original language quotation is required.

Thanks Demeter. I've just figured out 1ac and see she meets the same criteria as 13ac, 21ac, 3dn, 6dn and 20dn, which I have, so the character who sings the aria will fit in the NW-SE diagonal, but only if the first two parts of his name are in Italian, but the third part in an English equivalent!
The answer to 14ac seems to be the same length as its wordplay, but is it one of the 13?

barretter, yes it is one of the 13.

Thanks. Looking closer at the Chambers entry I see there is an Italian connection.

I've solved all the clues, agree on 6d, but am not seeing an ambiguity in the third row. My grid seems to work fine without a dot.

Read across the 3rd row. What 3 letter word do you see?

I see "a" three-letter word, actually. Again, never saw the ambiguity in the first place, so wondering if I need to reverse engineer one, but I'm assuming I can leave alone what I have. Thanks.

Also wondering about title, but no big deal.

Can I be the only one who is really struggling with the clues? I have. I think, seven of the 13 and have some idea how they are entered without having got near to finding the quotations or the speakers. I'd really appreciate some hints to some of the clues, say 18, 30 and 33 across and 5. 9 and 13 down. If I could get a foothold I might be able to make more progress.

Escuan, I have also found this hard going but have finished a few minutes ago.

Your queries:
18 is what Don Manley calls a charade: 'ruined primarily' + 'on account' (with one letter surplus) + 'evil' + 'SS';
30 is thematic (the partial def is the last word);
33 is thematic (try Google for some examples);
5 is thematic (which should make you smile!);
13d is thematic (think methodically).

But I'm as stuck as you are on 9. I have the word, which fits the def, but can't parse the clue at all apart from the obvious partial anagram.
