Thank you Ionacarr. 5 down didn't really make me smile, but I did doubt whether the definition was sound.

All complete now, many thanks to ionacarr and barretter.

In 18a, the definition is ‘hopeful states’ In 32a, the definition is (a toy spinning) top. In 8d, the wordplay was more helpful to me than the definition: it’s a near synonym for ‘to report’, followed by ‘you and me’ = US. 16d requires the American spelling of the complaint known by some as ‘the runs’. In 29d, the definition is ‘lowlife’ and requires a noun; I think the Chambers definition is suspect, since it refers to ‘person’, but I’ve never heard the term used of anyone but a man and the word is not flagged as an American usage but its use is rare in British English in my experience.

Barretter, 13d is thematic and the def is teaching. For pollsters think of a type of poll eg before an election which contains 'working' + 'lock of hair -r' hope this makes sense
For 29d think of a 5 letter philosopher and remove the letter from the quote

Thanks very much Carpox1 and Bambi123, I'm well on the way now though I suspect 13dn will be my last solution! It's surprising how many Greek and Roman goddesses are considered "protectors of marriage. I didn't even know that the correct one is female!

I have 13dn and all the rest now but am having difficulty "resolv[ing] ...the entry ambiguities. Does 5 or 6 start with "a". I possibly have others of the 13 wrongly entered.

Thanks very much for that. I shall have to rearrange my entries for 13ac and 14ac. Probably best to start with a fresh grid!

Got it all sorted now. I had to rearrange 8dn too. I had the first and fourth letters in the wrong positions. No ambiguities now. Thanks to everybody who helped.

Having trouble tracing second speaker, are 4th and 5th letters of 13D 'm' and 'r' and 4th of 38 'r'?

I'm still struggling with 28 & 33 across and 22,23 & 25 down. I have an answer for 15 across but the wordplay baffles me.
