I've made some progress on this -- I've solved all but one clue, and I have located and shaded the speaker of the second quotation (the one from the extra letters) in the grid.

However, I haven't been able to solve 6D. I also haven't guessed the first quotation, nor have I found its speaker in the grid. And thus I still have 33 unfilled squares in the grid (due mostly to the uncertainties caused by having to "treat" thirteen answers).

I'd appreciate a hint on 6D.

Jaye,

I'm in a similar position, but with 3 unsolved. Unfortunately, one of these is 6D.

I do have the first quote and speaker, though. It's a character from opera in the NW to SE diagonal.

Could you give me a hint for 1A or 7D?

I'm in a similar position to you chaps, but with four unsolved and missing the second quote.

Definition for 7d is "Western American" as in movie. Crops up quite often. A synonym for style in its meaning in this clue could be "name"

In Re 6d: I'm not subtle enough to give a hint, so... the Greek character is BETA and money = TIN. I hope that this helps. I have answers to only about a quarter of the clues, though - this is the toughest for quite a while in my view.

Thanks BC and Carpox1.

Could someone give me a hint for 1A?

1A is an stage actress, enumerated 8 4. The clue is straightforward: English + Christmas turned + essentially more + commercial + profit.

So the first quote is a line from an opera? Is it in English?

I am absolutely nowhere with this one but I assume the first quote (4 words) is the first line of a very famous aria from an Italian opera, in Italian. I think the title gives you the clue to the first two words of the aria's title :"mosh" "onaland".
However, if 1ac starts with an E I don't know how the character's name fits in the NW-SE diagonal, so I could be completely wrong.

Jaye,

It's sung by the character in the main NW/SE diagonal. It's subject matter is the same as that of the first quote. Since the quote is 4 words in English and the original language, I'm not actually certain which one is required.

Barreter,

1A is one of the answers which has to be entered thematically.
