I am struggling to understand 4dn and 18dn. I can see the definitions in both clues. Also where is the abbreviation? I must have missed it!

Escuan, I do not have access to OED but the online American Heritage dictionary (www.ahdictionary.com) has two pronunciations of the word. The first rhymes with 'bean' the second rhymes with 'fine'. Neither rhymes with 'bin'. So I think it's ok.

I do not agree that the five unclued entries form a series. They are closely related to five c*******s that form a series but they, themselves, do not.

As was pointed out earlier, the said entries form a g.......... Series, check it in Chambers.

Buzzb I'm sure you are right. The two pronunciations are in line with what I'd have expected. It was just that as the OED had been specified it seemed as though that is what was correct. Either I have misread the pronunciation hieroglyphic (very possible) or the OED online is plainly wrong (less likely). I have the complete OED in compact form, but I can no longer read the tiny print even with the magnifying glass provided.

escuan - most public libraries give free online access to the full OED. It may be worth exploring!

Thanks Unclued but I am well aware of that and use the OED online now that my aging eyesight can no longer cope with the tiny print of the compact edition. You can also use this method to access the ODQ with full search facility - very necessary seeing that the indexes in successive editions of the ODQ are quite inadequate.

I've come to this a little late. I take it that 5 of the unclued answers are homophones of the series 1,2,4,8,16...but I have a problem with the homophone for 'one' since I make 42 'neogenesis' (doesn't quite fit the definition but assuming the first 'N' is dropped it fits the wordplay). So my first 2 letters for the one homophone are 'WE', which seems to exclude the possibility of a homophone. Is anyone still monitoring this thread ?
