Barreter I've sussed 20 ac. (i)s in 'alo (an aspirate traditionally denied to those in the East End). Also 15 - a NZ word for meals followed by ar(e) reversed.

Sorry for misspelling your name, Barretter. I think snubbed is OK as it stands.

I agree with Ginge that "snubbed" should be "stubbed" not that it matters particularly.

All done apart from parsing 16a. Can anyone help? I have the misprint/synonym.

Escuan, I see now that the second definition of "snub" in Chambers is "cut short" so you are right,. Heisenberg, the misprint in 16a is the first letter of "gas" which should be an "m".

Hi again barretter, the first "stubbed" was a typo, I did use "snubbed" later. Apologies for any confusion.

Having at last finished this puzzzle I have found what seems to be an anomaly. I assume that the "OED" unclued entry is intended to be a different spelling of a familiar word. But when I looked at the entry in the online OED the pronunciation given rhymes the second syllable with "bin", not "been". The word actually is an adjective referring to an earlier person (another p**e). Has anyone else noticed this - or have I got the wrong word? Or does it even matter?

I have the same word as you. The third letter being the different one from the usual word. I think the pronunciation is a mistake by the look of it but I'm sure it's the right word. I think this is a small glitch in an otherwise enjoyable puzzle.
