Hello, Malone,
That's great.
I am looking forward to the TV coverage on/from the Somme.
I won't be getting much sleep while the coverage is on!

Yes, clues like that annoy me!

Hello, Elle and Pigale,
The chicks were ringed today!
They are getting big and are starting to stretch their wings.
Doing very well!

Hey, Rusty!
That's it! Dani had been planning to compete with Laura Trott and someone else in a track event?
Or am I misremembering? I seem to recall her being moved from that to the road.
My head is a mishmash of bits of information!
But why is she being shunted aside now when she ranks so highly? Does she not have grounds for appeal?
You must be quite an expert by now on the First World War!
I enjoyed reading - and improving my knowledge from - Lyn MacD's books very much - I like her format - but I couldn't read any more, it would be a surfeit for me.
Goodness , yes, it will be one hundred years from the Battle of the Somme!
What date, Rusty? What commemorations are afoot?

The crossword clue.......
Thus Asian islander upset some Indians (7)
I think I have done it.
Navajos = Indians (def)
so - thus
javan - Asian Islander
both reversed (upset)

You are annoyed because the Navajos have been referred to as "Indians" instead of Native Americans.
And there was no necessity for that, as it wasn't even relevant to the clue.

Hello, Elle!
Ist of July is the day the troops went over the top on the Somme.
The "someone else" is Jo Rowsell-Shand.
The way I hear it, Dani has no right of appeal because she is no longer in the "British Cycling podium group" or some similar tosh!
I have a good mind to cheer for the Aussies in the cycling events!
The Great War fascinates me.
The books I ordered, one is about the families left behind and what happened to them. One is about the "boy soldiers". The youngest they found was twelve. And one on "the last survivors" of the war.
And one on the Australians at Fromelles.
So, all quite different, really.
Yes, I hate clues like that.
I do not give a hoot what Chambers says.
It is disparaging!

Hi, Rusty!
I see that Malone was telling you about two television programmes commemorating the Somme.
I will look them up when I get my next week's TV guide; I should like to see them.
I shall be interested, too, to hear about the book (when you've read it) concerning the families left behind and what happened to them.
I might like to read that?
I think my favourite Lyn MacD book was "The Roses of No Mans' Land".
Perhaps because it was nearer to home in being medically orientated.
Did you watch the big debate about the Euro Referendum last night? although a bit late in the day for you, as you've already done your voting.
We go tomorrow - the polling station is very near by.
Yes, I looked in on Lassie and chicks. They are HUGE!
I read the blog about the ringing.... they say there will be more news tomorrow......
Time for a coffee.....and maybe a shortbread biscuit........
(I do like those!)

Hello, Elle!
I am really looking forward to the Somme programmes.
The book you are interested in is called,
"The Quick and the Dead. Fallen Soldiers and Their Families",
By Richard van Emden. One penny on Amazon!
It gets excellent reviews. Have a look?
I just hope it approaches Lyn MacDonald's standard.
That's asking a lot, though.
The Roses of No Man's Land was excellent, I thought.
No, I did not watch Referendum show.
I am a Remainer.
The bookies have Remain favourites to win.
Shortie biscuits are great!

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, I have had a quick look...thank you for the title.....it sounds as though it will be a "good read".
From what I can gather, the book follows a similar format to Lyn's books - using extracts from diaries and personal letters etc.
I liked that in the very first book of that type that I read about the Great War - by Sebastian Faulks (cannot remember the title?) - and then all the similar ones by Lyn.
I am considering buying it?
I shall vote to Leave, in the Referendum tomorrow.
It would be interesting to discuss it, but I guess the Forum would not be considered a suitable platform for a political discussion!
Pouring with rain now - and thundering (very loudly) and lightning!
Dog distressed (she will want to sleep with us) and cat oblivious!

P.S. The book by Sebastien Faulks - written in conjunction with Hope Wolf - was "A Broken World: Letters, diaries and memories of the Great War"

Hello, Elle,
Yes, it seems to be a good book.
He has written several about the Great War.
It would be too much to hope I have found another Lyn MacDonald!
How is your door lock now?
Been a fine evening here.
