Elle, Yes - I had a beautiful almost white golden and I cried my eyes out when he died; I would recommend a retriever to anyone who wants a dog who is nice to everybody, including children and elderly people, as well as pacifist towards other dogs. I used to take River to the Old Folks home and he was so gentle with all the elderly ladies who wanted to pat him.

Only one other thing to say though, have a good hoover! the shedding is an ongoing thing just getting worse twice a year; even daily grooming will not stop a Goldie from shedding his hair, but that's a minute drawback compare to the pleasure/affection he will give you.

I think the grey squirrels are responsible for the lack of red squirrels in England, am I right? Seem to have read this somewhere. I also think grey squirrels are more tame than their red cousins.

Hi Pigale/Elle
We have grey squirrels in our garden at the moment there are two babies with thin tails who dont care about humans and are very precocious,we have lots of trees so they have a good playground the dogs are not keen as they are both terriers their instinct is to chase, the squirrels have a bad reputation not always true.People used to introduce alien species without thinking the damage they might do but Red squirrels are now getting Leprosy which isnt spread by the Grey

I wonder if there are any grey squirrels in France? I personally had never heard of the grey species until, during a trip to London, I went to Richmond; I think it was on the edge of Richmond Park that I saw my first grey squirrel; There were plenty there who looked so tame, being used to people feeding them; To me, it was a discovery.

Speaking about my Retriever, he used to spend hours trying to understand why a squirrel he had seen climb up one tree did not eventually come down (as would a cat) - but had in fact moved on to the next tree !

We are asked to muzzle our dogs in our local parks should the dogs show squirrel- chasing tendencies.
Fortunately, I don't have to worry about mine...she will chase so long as the squirrel keeps moving, but if it stops, then so does she!
She doesn't want to catch it, only run about!

Hi, Rusty!
How are you? I do hope that everything is all right with you and yours?
It is worrying that you have been missing off the forum for about ten days now, with no word from you.
It would be good to hear from you.

Hi Elle!

How are you today? After a grim start to the day, it has now turned to be a lovely afternoon.

Did you read the report on the osprey site about human intruder causing distress to the birds? Hope it had no damaging effect.

My little birds are growing well, as far as I can see; it's not always easy to count how many have hatched - they wriggle about too much!

Hello, Pigale!
We are just back home again. We have been out all the afternoon as it was so lovely.
Cooler than of late though, although I rather like that as the atmosphere is much fresher.
Yes, I read on the osprey site about the human intruder.
Fortunately , there do not appear to be any resulting ill effects to the birds and their eggs.
A very thoughtless action though.
Well, I must think now about cooking dinner......

Apropos of nothing, I've just watched the spoof Shakespeare documentary (which I recorded last night, or the night before) in which "Philomena Cunk" is repeatedly corrected for pronouncing "pentameter" as "penta-meter" rather than "pent-ameter" - but surely she was correct? Penta - five, meter - stress? What justification is there for pent-ameter?

Sorry for late reply Chrise !

I would agree with you and have just listened to 'the official English pronunciation' on Google, which is penTAmeter, the 'accent tonique' being on TA.

Hardly late, pigale. However I don't understand how penTAmeter is supposed to be pronounced!
