Thanks, unclued. Do we work to the nearest second, then, or are fractions (somehow) used? Since I believe I have the numbers (in no particular order - as they say): 3, 8, 16, and 20 or 21, but it's that unravelling of the middle pairs that remains stubbornly elusive, even after googling.

Gitto, I have since revised one of my answers which erroneously gave two clashes. I now have 28, but am still struggling to get the messages out satisfactorily.

Don't forget there can be extra (forced) clashes in unchecked cells.

To my surprise I think I have the solution: many thanks to ionacarr for a number of very nicely judged hints. To return to a previous post (number 69), I agree that it’s the first possibility that’s required and that the resulting completed grid won't show evidence that the solver has actually worked everything out: however, for a correct submission on this basis, the solver would have to choose the correct replacement in each of the 37 other pairs and only extraordinarily lucky guesswork alone would achieve that. I hope that the view would be taken that having the correct replacement in 37 out of 38 cases provides undeniable evidence that the solver has achieved sufficient understanding.

Notwithstanding the debate about the central column, can I check the correct grid entry for 25a please (EARBOB) ? By my reckoning, the O is misprinted as D, but I also have a clash with 14d which I can't account for.
