Thanks for all your help. I took ages working out 4A but got there in the end. Have answers for 12 and 19 across but cannot see why they are what they are other than they fit (that assumes my second part of 9D is correct...) - likewise 20A.

I have the second word of 9D, I think, but no idea on the first. Have all the available letters for 21A and 26A but cannot get close. As a result, I have completed >90% of the grid with no idea who the characters are or what the link is...

In fact I am now sure I have 9D wrong which means my 12A and 19A are probably wrong as well...

angst, this is what I've got...

12A - game + a + yob = end of clue (think footy), with 2 extra letters added

19A - irrationality is def'n; uniform (think phonetic alphabet) + when inside an artistic type of light, with 1 extra letter

20A - make is def'n; issue + Roman 50, with 1 extra letter

9D - I don't get it either! (I have an answer)

21A - not sure if this is an extra letter one or not, as I didn't add them up. Works both ways. First part of clue gives you a name, which is made up of typically + American

26A - first part is def'n = a + trim

Hope this helps.

21A has an extra (final) letter

9D is very sneaky, if my parsing is correct..."discovered" indicates the "peeling" of consulting, diverse as the anagrind and one letter then added.

Dear livs/ixion,

Amazingly, it now looks as though my 11A and 19A were both correct all along - I cannot parse 11A - I got the yob and the extra letter at the end (and a letter in the middle of synonym for yob) but I cannot parse the beginning - maybe I can't parse it at all but it must be right.

19A was correct and I had it parsed correctly.

9D - had never heard of it but now I understand - thanks.

20A - I must be going mad - I have the right answer surely - ends with 50 and it means "make" but can't parse it.

Still stuck on 21A. Will keep going.

Thanks again.

12A game[2 letters]- a - yob[4 letters] - defn, where the best action is - extra letter after the first letter of "yob" then another extra at the end.

21A 2 letter word for typically/very and a two letter word for American - add one letter for a composer.
