That's what I've got - what a French rugby player might score. I'm stuck on 16, which I think might be a German dialect word (according to Chambers), which contains only one vowel (an "I"), but I can't parse it. Can anybody offer an explanation? Please....

It's one that needs 2 additional letters - the remaining four are 'written in' the body of the clue.

And, yes, It is a German dialect word, but quite well known here (or used to be).

In that case, I had the right word for 23D this morning! I also had the characters & creator, but only now, having printed it out again and coloured in the spare letters, do I see where they all go.

I agree about 16A, but I can't parse it, either.

Martin - yes one vowel. The answer (plus two letters) is inside the first two words. The word was popular when I was a child to describe a layered skirt.

Hi
Nearly finished BUT:
15d. I can't find a word to fit the letter pattern. Is it a proper noun? And any guidance for 4a and 12a? I feel they must be easier than I'm finding them.

Thanks

?U?C?P?I? is the pattern (as at post 5), the answer is capitalised in Chambers
