Thanks, Ixion. My Chambers may be a bit old.

I'll give it all more thought.

So it does. A new one on me, I must say.

Found all the characters and author now.

Thanks Livs.

hi livs et al,
not getting very far with this!
don't want to be a 3d, or a 18a (if i've got it right) but am losing my 7d (if i've got that right).
a line on 7 "straght" clues would be lovely. :-))

What you might be losing in 7d would be your toupee should you be wearing one :-)

Actually 8 straight clues (good old Grauniad). Hope it is acceptable to the rule of guidance rather than answers to list them:

1a, 2d, 6d, 18d, 24d, 26a, 27d, 30a

dizoz, I think your 18A may be wrong (only the last 3 letters, but it will affect 8D). Try Chambers Word Wizard and check out a few definitions, remembering Lou & Anne - the word was new to me.

Have you got 14D yet? That was one of my first, and it's still my favourite. Two extra letters to go into the answer, and the definition's at the end of the clue (LOL). Bizarrely, it also works as a straight clue if Enigmatist numbers badgers among his 'good friends', as a lot of us in the UK do!

Hope that helps. I thought this was a good Genius, though I have two answers I can't quite explain and two clues still unsolved: 4A and 5D. Not too bothered, though, as I always tend to feel the job is done once I've got the puzzle-within-a-puzzle.

Hi livs, I struggle with 5D too and not convinced by my answer which is a measure of my uncertainty, 4A is sort of final leftovers if that helps!
