...and 42A. Does 48 begin with the three-letter word for "male" and is it a Maori word?

No - you need a single letter for male then an unusual bovine pluralised around an "o" All together producing shrubs

Phil, if you mean "the sapiutan or wild ox of Sulawesi" it produces exactly the Maori word I was indicating by different means! I am still totally bemused by 6D, if 5A is "tootsy" : there aren't many words of the pattern OA*S and none of them seem to mean "patriots", unless it's the "last refuge of scoundrels".

Your 5a is fine. Don't forget that there are also clashes.

So is there a clash in the first letter of 6D?

Hi Barreter

Yes there is.

The answer is a short form of a word that can mean patriots- it sounds like small annoying insects.
