Strictly speaking 38A is a ten letter word for "agitated" from which a two letter word which is the plural of the Latin for "gods" (Mars and Jupiter being Roman gods) is removed. I would be grateful for any hints about 27A and D.

I'm having problems sorting out the messages. I think that in four cases of the overlong words, the double letters could go in more than one place (eg 14dn). This affects not only the choices of letters, but their sequence in "normal grid order", which makes for a lot of permutations.
I suspect the last word of one of the messages might be an 8-letter word beginning with S and ending with N. If so I have an error somewhere. Could someone confirm or deny this?

The double letters always go in an unchecked cell.

There are some answers that have two unchecked cells but if you enter the letters in the wrong one then other answers don't make sense.

In 14d the 2 letters go in the first unchecked cell (cell 2)

Yes one of the messages does end with an 8 letter word s??????n

If you need anymore help give me a shout.

Thanks, djawhufc). All sorted now. I don't think the preamble was terribly clear about the placing of the letters of the overlong answers.

Thanks Djawhufc, I've now got the words and will attempt to justify them to myself! Still nowhere near finished.

Got 42D now. I always thought of them as towers rather than pits
