thanks to rambler for the word etc.

That should have read

To 'snow' someone is to flannel them (I believe) and I'll leave 'balls' for you think about :)

I have a new keyboard / tablet which I am finding hard to get used to.

Thanks RE. Never come across "snow" = "flannel" - in fact, I don't know what to "flannel" someone means (other than help them wash in the bath, I suppose!)

Chris: I presume AB was using the verbs "flannel" & "snow" meaning "flatter"; the rest should be obvious (another word for "rubbish")!

Congratulations ab.
Thanks for hosting rambler, tremendous clip.
I will now admit to recently having become somewhat disillusioned with both "Clueless" and "Peer Review" with, in my opinion, some clues (not necessarily my own) seemingly ignored or discounted because they have been misunderstood or deemed too complex. However, by asking for confirmation or a full parse you have ensured that each entered clue has been given due consideration. Bravo rambler for having the courage to have done so (I have also noticed you regularly do likewise in "Peer Review" Les so plaudits to you also).

@ginge

Re your previous post- I believe that 'CLUELESS' began as a 'quickie' response to the setter's word and was not required to have an explanation due to every entrant being well versed in cryptic clue construction (the merits of the winning clue were always hotly debated !)

'PEER REVIEW' was a bit more relaxed, allowing contributors to explain their clues in detail and I personally have found them to be the more 'fun' element of the two contests, as it is your peers that decide which is the best clue.

I agree with you that Rambler that is to commended for asking clarification to judge a clue on it's merit on 'CLUELESS' as that is only fair to every entrant.

Cryptic crosswords are now 100 years old and have evolved from the baffling to an entertaining pastime. Maybe we should ask for an explanation of every clue, but as we already know the answer in these contests- surely we can parse it ourselves or always ask for a parse :).

I love this site and am now high on a concoction of painkillers, so please excuse my loquaciousness :)
