I must confess I've been unable to unravel it. I'm sure it's my fault but I would be grateful if someone other than ginge would help me.

your parse was just about spot on ref elf, anagrind "form of" so there's nothing superfluous. Glad you liked it. I've had the idea for some time but this was the first occasion I felt it worked quite well and of course I wouldn't have felt it appropriate until your return.

I'll get it off my chest now - please forgive me for failing to parse ginge's clue - obvious when pointed out (aren't they all?)
