GK - your 13a isn't right. It's 2 words (2,3). Once you have it, 8d falls into place easily enough. I am completely stuck on 10a, the last one to go:

English race (5) [or 2,3; 2,2,1 etc]

E.I.E

Any hints?

(I should say, I thought 13a was METRO as well, but the only way I can get 8d to work is if "a pair at Old Trafford" isn't RO but something else)

No, ginge. The only thing they have in common I can hardly reveal here!
Jazzy, you will be right: the setter has a habit today of NOT indicating the break-up of the letters! Thank you very much!
Any ideas btw on the other one? The first E is possibly wrong, but not the 2nd one. You may well be right, ginge, that "13" does NOT refer to the solution at 13 in this grid (& metro is not absolutely certain). ANY suggestions welcome: it's my last one, I hope!

barista: I think 10a is a foreign man's name (quite common), the race being the distance.
I presume you mean zeros at cricket in 13a? I find it very unfair today that for several solutions only the total number of letters is given where there are in fact 2 words.

I don't do this crossword, obviously, so I was unaware of the possibility of breaking the grid entry into more than 1 word. Sorry for wasting your time.

E= English + a 4 letter word for race (in Bradfords if you have it)
The whole thing is a foreign christian name

Thanks GK. I am a bit unhappy about the distance being the race, but I suppose it just about works. I agree that there are too many clues with an unindicated 2 word answer. Perhaps another Grauniad glitch, but given the lack of definitions it's made it rather harder than is fair. Yes, you've got 13a now (or at least, the same 13a as I have).

Is it just me, or is this less than inspiring? I'm just finding it a slog through words without any sense of satisfaction.

Also, the 'instructions' re 16 (which I have) seem to be rather loosely followed.

Am I missing something, or am I just grumpy?
