18d I see what you mean. I suppose the reading is that, to be affected they must be the answer.

I think the title should actually be 'you can't have either'.

thanks, Will37: as so often, it's obvious when it's pointed out, but I just couldn't see it, and now I can relax. Fortunately I had the right answer.

Struggling. Got one of the words from added letters.. Possibly the name.?Is an accent involved? Can't get the clash word although it must be related. And several clues not solved. 15d. 21d. 27d. Very tough.

The name has an accent.

As for the clash word, see my post regarding the title. At first sight, there are several possibilities for some clashes.

15d Anagram with extra letter
21d Definition is the last word. Wordplay is 1+3+1+1
27d Key word is 'principally'. Apply it to some of the words.

Some contributors seem to have found this not too hard. Personally, I found it a bit of a pain. I suppose it just depends what wavelength you're on.

See definition 2 of the transitive verb of the answer.

Nearly filled the grid: only 32 across left to solve, even though the answer seems obvious.

A bigger problem for me is the name to enter below the grid. I am not sure what the preamble means by "their residues". I have tried using the un-entered letters, but they don't throw up anything meaningful to me. It would be nice to know whether I am on the right track, or should I be looking for something else?

You are correct to use the un-entered letters. It's not a commonly known name, but if you Google the two thematic words together, it should come up.
