Just realised I still haven't figured out the wotdplay for 27a:

i have the answer and I get "places of worship" but have no idea how it's parsed?

Ahh! "flat parts below domes" - I get in now 😃

Why is it that posting a query often immrdiately prompts the answer for oneself? Some deep psychological meaning here?

First prize I completed the day of (or so I think)
Much to like. Favorites include 8d, 23d

Still haven't really parsed 13d – any hints?
Also struggling with parsing for 16d. Does "having downed tools" get me the second word? (If so I may be missing the context of that meaning)

Wheelhouse... yes, to your suggestion for 16 D. If you're on strike, you've downed tools and said to be ???

Wheelhouse... the answer would be 'hard to accept' if the third letter was changed, swapping the usual 'chess players'.

Quick solve. All parsed except the "state of India" in 5d - probably just my lack of knowledge.
Favourite 25a for the misleading "better".

CrhisE, two letters in the answer are the abbreviation for the most populous state in India. That's inside 'occurring immediately after that'.
