The magic of posting. Figured out the trick, spotted the hidden message, now have 1a and 1d.

n00b - I've only just started the second gridfill, but if you're referring to the new 6d, that is also in Chambers as one word, slightly surprisingly.

My reply to that: 6d !!!

Yes, thank you... I see it now. Surprising. I got that before the other and I just wrongly assumed that was the 2 worder...

N00b26 #41 I don’t have chambers app. I use a combination of the BRB, chambers crossword dictionary, search facility on this site, anagramsolver.net and general googling. Even tried a bit of AI but it’s too annoying with its over confidence in its wrong answers!

Very enjoyable, if typically difficult, offering from Sabre that I’ve finally managed to complete

Thanks for your reply - it's interesting to see what people use. I use the chambers crossword dictionary (hardcopy) too. I really like it and I think I prefer it in book form rather than on the phone.

Could anyone parse 18D (Ruffians ...) and the Across one starting `Naked actor' for me? I've got the answers, and the words to remove (and their outcomes in the second grid)---but I'm obviously missing something or lacking some knowledge.

Thanks very much, Mattrom.
All done now.
(I found this crossword seriously hard to get started on, but it did speed up; and then it was really provoking to be unable to complete these last two.)

Great crossword. Can't parse the wordplay for 18d (despite the earlier hint) or the penultimate across

Smelly, you're looking to remove the two-letter synonym for 'work' from a word in sight.

I've got the sang one. Sorry I meant penultimate as in in the grid. The one about the loom.

Still don't understand 18. That's basically the same explanation as was given before. Someone is going to have to be a bit less cryptic.
