Although I’m not optimistic, a hint to 10d might give me some impetus, please

Hope this isn't too early, but the last word is what you're looking for. Beautiful wordplay with the first word and 'mostly smaller' is used in the usual sense (!). Such a wonderful clue I feel like I'm still sniffing out the parsing, if that makes sense, so please forgive any errors.

It took me careful study of Chambers to get the wordplay for 10d.

In trouble here! I have the grid three quarters full, but my NW quadrant is virtually barren, filled only by 9 down and the 5 letter entry in row 2. Any scintilla of a nudge would be gratefully accepted.

Oh dear, so close yet so far. After a considered guess at the two word instruction I decided to move onto the end game. I am now in the position that

a) In the original grid I need both entries in row 1, the first entry in row 4, 1 down and 2 down
b) In the second grid I need only the first entry in rows 1 & 4 and 1 down.

Patting ourselves on the back for solving this.
Thanks, Sabre.

Both grids now finished. The only outstanding irksome little problem is that I cannot parse the naked actor clue, but I do know the answer.

The first entry in row one is the singular of a word given in Chambers only in the plural. The second entry is a double definition. Row 4: well, there are only two 7-letter across entries.

The "naked actor" clue is an anagram.
