Well unless anyone else wants to claim the responsibility, I have to confess that I questioned the clue to 2d in my submission. I just added a "Shome mishtake, shurely!" on that clue, both to reflect Private Eye's own editorial style and allow the possibility that the problem with parsing might have been mine rather Cyclops's. If Cyclops keeps his eye on this thread, I would like to record my thanks for all the very enjoyable puzzles he has set over the decades that I've been doing them!
The idea that Private Eye actually reads all submissions was a bit of an eye-opener for me. I had always assumed that (apart from the Listener which maintains statistics for all solvers) publications would draw a submission and only then check whether that entry was correct. Seems much more efficient than checking them all and then making the draw.
