OK, I solved all the clues, but later decided to have a look at this forum to see if there were any interesting comments. I thought I had parsed 12a, and thought it a terrible clue, but various comments here seem to be hinting at a differrnt (and I hope better) parsing, which I can't see at all. Any really strong hints, anyone? (I'm not usually one of Paul's greatest fans, but I really did like this puzzle. For me as for many others 17d was both LOI and COD. A really excellent clue.)

For 12a what is the primate?

... and the Renault?

I said earlier that the primate is better known with "man" in front. The Renault model is fairly well known, but if you you don't know it, you don't!

OK, Chrise, thanks. I must have missed your comment about having "man" in front, or saw it and it didn't register on me. Once I picked that up, the rest was easy. Like over 90% of models of cars, I didn't know the Renault, but with the primate in place it was obvious what it had to be, and a few seconds were enough to confirm it. Thanks again.
