For 6d, think Linford Christie (though apparently he detested the assocaition).

@Roof I had you as the first person on this forum to get the Devon town.if you think from the clue it contains 'on' I think we know where we are.

Roger, I've definitely seen the risqué clue for 24, likely more than once, though I can't recall the setter(s). So I found the clean version a welcome change.

A quick search reveals it has indeed been clued in such a way many times. Most recently by Brummie (last year) but also Pangakupu and Picaroon (more than once) in recent times. Not surprising Paul didn’t want to go down the same route.

Late start yesterday and like many of you took a while to get into Paul’s thinking. Although he is not one of my favourite compilers I enjoyed this prize puzzle ( no schoolboy humour which so many seem to find amusing ). Still one or two to
parse ie 10 ,12. FOI 1a ,LOI 21 COD has to be 17d absolutely brilliant .Liked 5a thought 7d was one of Paul’s overcomplications..Enjoy rest of this beautiful weekend.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one - two 45 min sessions and I had it complete (almost). Lots to like, FOI 9a and then managed a steady trickle until the eastern side was complete. W took a lot longer. COD 17a for it’s sweetly succinct wordplay. Took an age to parse 7d.

Only one I didn’t manage is 14a. Every crossed letter there but just can’t see it. Any help appreciated.

And of course, the instant I wrote and post that comment it becomes obvious

Thanks to the thread for helping me understand 17d. Got the answer from the crossers and the def but I was tortured by the wordplay. Clever clever Paul! I thought the single letter insert in 7d was unfair.

Thanks, Jono @44, and I agree with Chrise @45: not a nice clue. Most of the others were clever and some of them witty, but I think 7d was below par.

Not too sure about 19d which no-one seems to have mentioned. Do we "'ear" "an" to get the first 2 letters?
