Oh yes, 6d of course! Somehow managed to forget about that one.

Ahhh, I'm sorry Roger., I did mistakenly say 1d when I meant 1a. I'll take your word for it and Google does give the answer as a slang term for "thief" but, alas, no mention of "jewel" anywhere.

17d - Quite brilliant and now my COD.

Thanks again:-)

Yes, 17 is my COD as well. And I didn't even know the film, just the Eric Dolphy album. 🤣

I only managed to get 12 via crossers. Then found parsing rather a challenge. Good clue, though.

Same here Geeker - I recognised the "Renault" but only after I Googled it and had never heard of the "primate".

I found this very unPaul-like and didn't enjoy it very much.

Not sure I'm finding this one of Paul's best either. Though typical in the sense it took ages to get going but started to flow. Mostly rhs completed now.

Is 5d a saying that passed me by? I've never heard of it. Though I have and thankfully I didn't.

Despite some pointers here I'm struggling with both 1s. Have an answer for 1d but can't make it fit the first part of the clue.

Hi Rocky
The 1s dropped quite late on for me. I got 1a first - once I had the last 3 crossers it could only be one thing, though as discussed already there’s a bit of a query over the definition. 1d then became equally obvious from the crossers: in my view the first part of the clue is more straightforward than the second, so I’m just wondering whether you have the right solution.

I don't think I do Rog from that explanation. I didn't fill it in I was that unsure.

Not got much yet, but I can help on 1a - the thief is operatic.
