Hi geeker
I read it as "the fifth" comes before the bargain, which is why I thought the order was off.

Started well. Was on Pangakupu's tip and the right hand side went in very well. Then got held up on the left with five clues. Then was travelling all day and just finished with 3d which may not even be right because I don't get it at all.

FOI 9a. LOI 3d. COD the Paulish 25a.

Thanks Pangakupu for some serious parsing brain freezes.

@rocky7 3d is, I think, quite a clever clue. It parses as 1,3 all surrounded by 2. The 2 is an abbreviation for “head of BBC” but “upset”, the 1 and the 3 are given by “end of fine” and “series” respectively. The definition is expressed in the clue as an example of the answer.

Thanks StevenC
So not FECUND, then? "Broadcasting" seems quite close!

nodrog@22, buzzybee@23. Thanks! That bit of rhyming slang was new to me, but I should have picked up on the second half (I was trying to find some way of taking the missing letters from the middle).

ChrisE@35--"The fifth bargain" is meant to be all one unit rather than "The fifth" + "bargain." The idea is, what do you call the second plan that you put into effect as a 4, 1? Like that, with a question mark because these are fanciful applications of that kind of name.

Hi everyone

I started at 3.00pm today and after getting 9ac straight away, I thought I would find this easy. Far from it. Yet another setter whose wavelength I'm not on. Perhaps I should give up trying.

I've finished, but the ones I can't parse are too many to mention. I had to keep checking on Dan Word to see if I'd got the right answer.

FOI 9ac, LOI 24ac I've no idea why, COD 25ac as It is one of my favourite flowers in my garden.

I'm crossing my fingers for an easier setter next week.

Thanks Stevenc. Makes sense and that's one of the things that I enjoyed about this puzzle. The fathoming it out afterwards but I'd have struggled with that.

ChrisE @26. Ah I see. I had "not out" as n.o., which kind of worked.
