Thanks both. I had looked up both words in Chambers (the PC-CD version) but failed to spot the bit tagged on that said it could also be an informal noun.

It's heard most often in the phrase "a word in your shell-like", used, for example, in Minder and Ashes to Ashes.

Two clues still to solve. Help please for 8d and 33d. - clearly, once one is done the other will be quickly sorted out!

8d: definition (new to me) is first two words. Famous choreographer plus word endings.

33d: definition is last word. 3 letter word for pleasure as a container.

I have 2 still to get - 39 and 40. It’s been hard going (but that’s not a grumble, of course).

Jockie, 39 is hidden.
40 def. is the last 2 words (think cartoon)

Threw in the towel yesterday after about 8 hours. Had a fresh look this morning and spotted an error in my entry for 28a - I had missed the "E" out of it!!. After a bit of jiggling about I have actually finished this masterpiece. A lot of cold solving of some difficult/devious clues required but well worth the effort of all the blood, sweat and tears. Congratulations and thankyou smidgers for this marvellous puzzle.

I’m almost there and it’s been fun. Solving 32D should enable me to finish the rest but I’m stuck. Can someone give me a tiny hint?
