Pendragon, don’t give up! You are on the right track with what you say about the first three words, and the remainder of the missing letters, including the Roman numerals, confirm that. If you google the ****** (i.e. the word made by the first 6 missing letters) of the song, it will indicate what to look for when you do the thematic letter changing (especially with Prospero’s helpful advice).

Re 6 modified entries
a. I have 2 on the left (as I look at the grid) which are generic;
3 on the right + 1 on the left are specific and famous

Am I on the right track?

b. For submission I assume one has to enter the modified entries

It was the famous one top right which sent me on the right track. The rest followed fairly easily.

Thanks buzzybee.
So, two on the left are generic, right?

Hi Ilippu,

a. The three on the left are all synonyms for the first theme word and all are in Chambers.
The three on the right are all proper names associated with the other theme word (and therefore not in Chambers).

b. Yes, I entered the final grid entries.

Thanks jono, and prospero, for your earlier post on entries.

The second on the left - good to know it is in Chambers.

Looks like I am done.

Thanks everyone for help on this. I now have it sorted. However, I initially got a bit misled on the right hand side substitutions as I thought that if you change the middle letter in 26d it could be a synonym for one of the theme words (not in Chambers but came up in Collins Thesaurus against the theme word in question!).
