For example, I could change 2 letters in 20a and then, at a push, 2 more in 20d to get 2 synonyms of the relevant theme word. Or I could change 1 in 15a to get the name of a theme word....

That's where I am. Solved the clues, got the theme, but suspect I'll spend the rest of the day (week?) failing to work out what to do with which letters.

if I am right, one could change 3 letters in 10 and one each in 13 and 27. Then to be symmetrical 3 in 23 and one in 6 and 20. If I have 19 right, though, I'm not clear about its relevance ...

Aah, yes, thanks Prospero - a great help. I'm not sure I would have got there on my own.

I had taken 19 as Odo referring to the noun that in this context the pronoun at the end of the theme phrase stands for.

So I assume we’re trying to end up with three words in each of the categories indicated by the theme. I can only spot one obvious one - 13a. I’m assuming that the changed letters shouldn’t be ones that cross with another clue.

Well OK I guess 27a is fairly obvious although not exactly a synonym.

Have finally got there. Duh. Wouldn’t have done it without Prispero’s tip, though. Sorry for convoluted explanation of relevance of 19d. Was trying to avoid spoilers. I mean if you imagine Odo saying the theme title when speaking to us, it’s who the final pronoun (of the title) would refer to.
