I started a separate thread for the Maskarade puzzle. I’ve done about half and so far so good.

Looking for hints for 5d please.
I’m stuck at the concept of “apparently a lawyer”.

Also if 18a definition is “stood by” my answer kind of means the opposite. Hmmm.

5d is a Shakespeare reference. Think of a play with legal elements. 18a, think "stood on".

Hi Femmenoire,

5d - The answer is a homophone/'in hearing' of "one that moved quickly" ( a make of shorts car) and the name of a "apparently a lawyer, she" (from Shakespeare)

18a - definition is "stood" as in an election and is the name of a country minus its first letter

Thank you Acton and Brendan
My literary knowledge is sadly lacking. Boatman is assuming we are more sophisticated than I am…

Thanks for general hints, and thanks for the DC ref, Brendan (not one I'd heard).
As to the theme, disrespect to 'the fart' is good with me.

Hi everyone

This week my daughter was visiting to sort out some ancient boxes, so I didn't start until 4.30pm. I got loads at first including some I can't fully parse. But I am stuck on the last three, the 13s - across and down. Can i have some hints please.

I can't fully parse 6d, 11ac, 20ac and 26d, though I'm confident of my answers.

Chris, I thought the theme was in the clues rather than the solutions. Yes, the subject might be unpleasant, but we can't do much about the nasty orange man as John Crace calls him.

I'm saving the maskarade for tomorrow, but I'm not sure I've understood the directions. I'll check out Jono's other thread.

Hi Roof
For 13a put one of the standard words for "boatman" (or sailor) inside a word for base - a bit loose; bottom would be closer.

13d was pretty much explained earlier

Thanks Chris

Of course, I was expecting a refernce to the setter - a bit of misdirection that I fell for.

Finished very early by my standards - grey windy day kept us indoors. Didn't need help from the forum, but hsd to use crosswordsolver to crack 25a and then LOI 5d. FOI was 1d.
COD: 7/23 for neat self-reference.

Have had a look at the Easter special: rather fun. Some easy clues in the clued answers, and the list of 6-letter words is coming on nicely with each answer in a-z order and its last 3 letters being the first half of another, with the a-z sequence helping narrow it down. Satisfying, thus far!
