Earmaniac,16a definition is 'Traps' (slang). An American rock group + a plant, with a clash.

Still struggling with this one. Thanks for the help with 20ac. Is the fabulous bird in 12ac defined as restless? Still don't get 'by top shack' is a letter removed? 38 is a mystery. Is there more than one clash? Is picked up a homophone indicator? 7 down despite a helpful hint to look for a 5 letter vessel eludes me too. I'm assuming definition is the last word. I have a two word name ascending in Column 1 which looks promising but becomes less promising as it turns the corner. Finally I have the three letters which fill the grid in 15d but no a scooby about how they relate to the clue. I'm probably asking for too much help but any morcels would be appreciated. Ta

Ok - apols if this seems abrupt…

12a - no; yes

38a - no

7d - put ‘blood’ before the clue

Your column 1 is probably correct. Note there are two names

15d - this is the first time in recorded history that ‘chubby’ has been used in this context.

HW7 @46 — just on your last point, I last year I published a puzzle with a clue for that word and my def was “chubby swimmer”, so this is maybe the second time it’s been used! 😆

Given that here we are, shouldn't the letter added to the highlighted word be one greater?

Returning to the discussion around Riversk's comment in post 21, the second intransitive use of the verb seems to solve problem, but is marked as archaic: 'old shed', perhaps? The first, 'to fall off', might do in a pinch.
