Did you mean 26a ethereal given the reference to Yorkshire? It is a word for green which if reversed might be how someone from Yorkshire would describe the vicar. I believe it was also part of Meghan’s nickname for her ex husband.
I have to confess to a sneakin’ admiration for the homophone.

Evening all. Long-time observer (ahem), first-time poster! 10A is in common usage in Scotland to refer the events of 2014 as @brendan has said. And the potential for a repeat of that poll is dubbed 10A2. Share the concerns though that it may not actually feature in the dictionaries!

ps can't parse the final 2 letters of 17D, otherwise done quite quickly

Hi Bernard,

17 - last 2 letters come from "appeal" ( as in she/he has sex appeal or she/he has "??”)

It's fair to say this usage isn't universally popular among crossword solvers, but it is among setters so is well worth attempting to commit to memory.

Woops! I unintentionally gave part of the answer.

I'll ask Norah to remove the offending section.

Sincere apologies.

Brendan, relax. It’s only a small part of the answer. No need to remove. Far worse is your spelling of “whoops” 😀

As for 10, the Scots deserve everything they get for coming up with that 'word' 👿

OMG Quisling, it's just one blunder after another for me lately.

This time it's a misspelling of Whoops and before it was Malone's shock and despondence at me writing "I should of..." instead of "I should have..."

The public shaming still makes me cringe to this day 😰
