Brendan, The Who also did a version on their Live at Leeds album.

Thanks Darla,

I used to own that album, along with Quadrophenia, but it was in terrible condition so never played it.

The theme here felt familiar and it occurred to me we had something similar in a Prize puzzle by Imogen in May this year. See here (spoiler alert)…

Not at all Brendan. A bit of useless background information never did anyone any harm.

The tragedy of this is I would have found it a lot harder say five years ago. I know 1a because I've seen their football team play a few times. But many of the theme answers have sadly become household names in recent years.

Already finished and didn't have to ask you good people for help once which says nice and easy to me. Thanks Kite for a gentle way in to Saturday. FOI 6d which made 5a straightforward. LOI 27a which I have not fully parsed yet. COD the popular 10a as I like clues like that.

Morning, Brendan and geeker,
I’m with you on 10a, Brendan. I liked it for the same reason as you, but it didn’t really register as a potential COD because it’s not that uncommon a device and it was one that I solved pretty much as soon as I read it.
Still not sure I get the Mose Allison reference, though if I google his name and the fodder for the solution it does come up as a description of his singing style. I’ll try to listen to Young Man’s Blues later. Was never a fan of The Who, I’m afraid - it just passed me by as I was a classical music geek when I should have been misspending my youth!

By way of pointless information to keep Brendan's theme going I was never a fan of The Who either Rog for different reasons. I never got it. I snuck in underage to see Tommy when it came out (it was what was called a AA in those days) and it went right over my head. Huge disappointment after all the hype.

As for your namesake the lead singer in recent years the least said the better.

Quick, but a couple of queries. I'm not sure of my answer to 27, and can't parse what I've got, and I haven't parsed all of 28a, so can't decide which third letter should go in.

[I have a 28-year-old son, and The Who are his favourite band, which I find puzzling. I have tried to 'educate' him, but he has no apparent interest in the late 70s/early 80s. His loss, I say.]
