Straightforward I thought, though I haven’t encountered Geeker’s ghost… 👻

Well, I'm obviously doing something wrong as I can't make any sense of this. My answer is an English spelling of a 'place in 5' - is that wrong?

There are two “places” that fit in 29a. I had the wrong one at first.

Ahhhh, got it! I did have the wrong 'place in 5' after all. Thanks again Rog and Geeker.

On second glance, my alleged "ghost" was a hallucinatory "parsing".
Thanks, jono! It's actually an excellent clue which in retrospect I should have rated as COD or runner-up.

I’m intrigued, geeker! Which clue are you referring to as a new potential COD?

roger, "face". The parsing is a US slang expression that I've always liked.

Or google "Mose Allison" and you'll see the term.

Hi Geeker,

Re 10a, I think the term used to create the answer is fairly universal in English speaking countries, and Chambers just gives it as an "informal adjective".

I chose it as a potential COD because I like the way an instruction for one part of the clue gives the answer.

Thanks for the Mose Allison reference. I'd never heard of him but just went to Youtube and listened to Young Man's Blues - loved it:-)

I’m going to join the consensus that this was an enjoyable though not too difficult puzzle. I really liked 10 also, geeker. Another COD candidate was 6. I had to study the map to get my LOI of 28. Never heard of it, but the other thematics were better known.
