The clues...
Requests for help should normally include the clue itself, the number of letters in the answer and details of any you already have. Any special instructions or additional information, common in Listener puzzles, should also be included.
Hints only, please, no answers.

The theme...
Help with the theme may also be sought here. The help given should be fairly gentle in nature. Aim to give just a nudge, a pointer in the right direction - and certainly not anything that would spoil the puzzle for others. If you do feel a post is too revealing, please get in touch with Norah, site administrator - email her at Norah.evoluted@aol.com. Norah errs on the side of caution, anything at all 'iffy' is likely to be removed.
The Listener is a unique puzzle and should be treated with respect.

Not so much guess what I’m thinking as guess where I’m cutting. The original cuts into 3 rectangles, but that can’t be what happens here as 169 - 20 doesn’t split nicely into two parts. So the cuts aren’t straight lines. Hmm.

And it's that GWIT on steroids that has me feeling that this will not be worth the grid stare. Congratulations to anyone with the patience or insight to complete this.

It's a shame, because the original is a classic.

I can't see the correct cuts either at the moment - but I can think of ways to cut 20 cells out using straight lines and not giving a problem in a 13 x 13 grid. Maybe a brainwave will arrive overnight...

I have a full grid, but before I move on to the end game, can someone please explain the first clue in 11 down?

aspria, I understand the wordplay (one abbreviation replacing another), but the definition still eludes me.

Many thanks CD. I have not got the theme word and 5 of the 6 examples hidden (craftily) in the grid. Unfortunately I can only identify one of the historic names - so this is going to be another GWIT grid staring slog.
