Thanks, Ukridge. Annoyingly, I'd thought of all that, so I really should have sorted it out.

I guess when there are anniversaries one is likely to get overlap between crosswords on the same theme. The IQ one this w/e was slightly more elaborate, imo.

I'm a bit unhappy with Ring 33. If I understand the definition correctly then isn't there a superfluous S in the wordplay?

The rings do not have extra letters. They are all normal clues.

Yes, what I mean is that just as a basic cryptic clue I don't fully understand the wordplay of Ring 33.

Since the definition is the last word of the clue, shouldn't the S at the end of the first word show up in the wordplay?

I'm doing fairly well, but haven't a Scooby about Ring 36... I'm surprised no-one has mentioned it here.
It's holding me up with the related radials, so a hint would be very welcome.

There are only two famous Jute leaders in history, and only one is the right length

I think 33 can just about be justified if one reads the apostrophe-s as a contraction of "has".

In general, towards the end there are no unchecked letters, so it's not too hard to finish the puzzle if one gets far enough.

I see what you mean about Ring 33, lemon. The clue would surely have worked without the "apostrophe-s". Having said that, it didn't bother me at the time and it was the first clue I solved.

I think iratus's explanation works for me, although I'm not sure I'd say I'm a fan of the clue! I spent some time wondering if I was falling for a particularly ingenious red herring...
