Yes, the answer to 3 is the definition for 7.

Thanks Samuipete and yes, the definition to 7d is C (as one would spell it) 3

I didn’t see it that way Bren. I thought BBC stayed as the definition for the 4 outer letters and only the 3 acted as the definition for the solution.

Hi Jono,

I read it as 3 letter "b" plus 1 letter "left" plus 4 letter "cattle" then finally the second "b".

That said, given the absolute mess I made of parsing 26a it wouldn't surprise me if I'm wrong - again:-)

Cancel that, I think I was right the first time. B (spelt) plus "left" plus. "cattle" plus B.

What part of the parsing does C refer to Jono?

BBC is the definition for the four outer letters (your b (spelt) + b).

Obviously I'm being dim Jono, but wouldn't that be BB? Why is the C needed if not to tell you where to look?

Oh, I see what you mean. If you add the spelt version to the single letter one you get the nickname of the BBC.

Sorry Jono and Samuipete.

Now got that lie down!

Unlike the Brendan et al's of this world I am very much a lark not an owl. So about 45 minutes in and finding it a typical Phillistine. Namely, the NW goes in in minutes and you think it's going to be a stroll and then not so. I don't know whether he does it deliberately but it often seems that way.

This forum definitely helped me with a few more (thanks to the night shift for that) so I'm about half done. And some great clues so far. I will be back for help but I'm going to press on. 9d has become a goal. I can't find a way into it.
