Finally completed this! - I found it a hard solve. Hats off to those who completed the puzzle earlier; and also to Mozart.

Agree about the ambiguity. Let's hope they accept either answer

I enjoyed this one. I don’t think I have seen this device before.
It must have been a nightmare to set given the HUGE number of possible CEs for all the normal clue entries. Multiple numbers of possible vowels on every position around and between consonants - and proper nouns or phrases as options.
It is a shame one ambiguity slipped through but honestly I am surprised we have not found more.
Bravo Mozart

I'm impressed so many have completed this so quickly. It's the first puzzle in the 2 years I've been doing the Listener that's defeated me. Most of the clues baffle me and I've only been able to cold-solve 15 so far, but despite having possibilities for 1a and 1d, that's not enough to put into a grid. If any kind soul can give me a steer on any of 2d, 3d, 4d and 40a, whichever would be most helpful, I shall persist. Otherwise, I'll call it a day.

Mack - I found this v hard too - but perseverance finally got me there. I'll try to give hints without giving too much away.
2d - the adjustment is in the entered answer. It's a 'sounds like' clue for someone who applies.
3d - the adjustment is in the clue. You need 5 + 1 for the wordplay; all backwards.
4d - adjustment in the entered answer. Definition at the end. Wordplay is 6-letter word missing a letter.
40a - I thought this clue was very clever and it's hard to give a hint without giving it away. The adjustment is in the clue, at the beginning.

For 40a, recall that the preamble implies that 'y' is to be treated as a vowel.

For the grid layout: the length in the grid must be the length of one of the paired answers. That, combined with the clue numbers up to 12, tells one a lot about where things go. Note also that there is only one pair of down entries in which the first begins after 12a.

I am up a blind alley, being unable to solve 15 across, 31 across and 8 down. Any nudges as to parsing these clues would put me out of my misery.

15a is &lit
31a is an anagram
8d is an unusual construction, but a fairly obvious synonym.

Have sorted 15 across and 8 down but still clueless about 31 across - a nudge much appreciated.
