I have reluctantly, or stupidly, returned to this. I have a grid pattern that appears to work as it is 2/3 to 3/4 full but I cannot get anywhere in the SE corner. A gentle hint for 32a or 40a (both of which I believe are of the same type) would be much appreciated.

Just solved 40a - not that I particularly like the clue.

.....and now got 32a. My BIG problem is that I don't have any words that fit 25d, 27a & 27d - everything else seems to fit nicely.

Finally got a full grid, full of proper words. Just need to understand 10,22 & 24 down before I move on to the end game.

Phew, all done now!!! I found this to be particularly difficult.

Once my brain has returned to (its) normal, which may take a day or two, I can move onto the Inquisitor.

Finding this one quite tricky but very satisfying!

Can someone help me out with the parsing of 23? I have it as 1 + 4 where the 4 is an anagram, but I can't figure out where the 1 is coming from.
