Both the ambiguities are nouns. One is expressly plural in more than one phrase under the keyword in Chambers. I don’t see a way to decide; presumably either works.

Lvb: the rubric as written allows a word in the original definition to be replaced by a phrase in the clue printed.

A good puzzle in my opinion, except for the ambiguity in 22d. I was able to find the three words and hence the name with about three-quarters of the grid completed, which helped with the rest.

I have very tentatively started to fill my grid, meaning 11d must start somewhere in the top row, is that right?

I think so, Gitto. I'm in a similar position as you.

Does 16ac start with I (capital I)? I think it should, but that causes trouble with 32ac!

Thanks

Since there's a 1a and a 1d, they must both start in the top left. 1a is 6 or 7 letters in the grid, so since there's a 5a and a 5d, 6d must start in at least the 7th column. So if 11d starts in the top row, 5d to 11d must start is 7th to 13th columns.

That's a shame! Do 12ac and 16ac start below 1ac, in which case I'm scuppered!

They don't both start in the first column.

Can I confirm that for the purpose of this crossword, the letter y can be considered both a vowel and a consonant?
To consider y a vowel is something new to me.
Having read previous posts, no one else seems too phased by this...

Lewap - ordinarily y can act as a vowel ( eg berry) or a consonant (eg yellow). In this puzzle, it only ever acts as a vowel.

Have finished, found it a bit of a struggle but interesting idea.

One loose ends for me - can't see what the change is in 5d (something move?)

Thanks
