Thanks hw7, my tentative answer was right, I just couldn't see the wordplay. Now up to 13 teams.

All done apart from the team in the 4th down clue that has a jumble in it (i.e. not 4d). I know who the winners are.

What an idiot!

Pleasant afternoon grid fill with thirteen extras found, but not a clue about proceeding......and then I reread the preamble. I've been doing these since Time out of Mind (not the Bobby album) and still manage to miss the bleeding obvious. Saw two teams at once and shall save the rest for tomorrow afternoon's skive!

I have 12 teams and I know where two others are hidden, but no idea where the last one lurks. I assumed that if I Googled those 12, the rest would pop out, but no! I think the theme must be a bit more obscure than I first thought.

I'm pretty sure it's a virtual, rather than actual competition, so Googling twelve and expecting a date to pop up won't work.

All teams are valid, though with very varied chances of winning [albeit history shows anything can happen, as per the winners here's previous success].

I enjoyed the puzzle and Harribobs’ cleverness in reflecting the thematic subject in the clues/answers. I relied quite heavily on an anagram solver to find the teams as my ignorance of the thematic material is profound; and, given that ignorance, will pass on the endgame.

Jack, if you have all the teams I assure you that you can finish this!!

After another half hour of this I am closing in quickly!

Just stumped by the wordplay to 10 down, which, based on my other solutions, must be thematic. I may be going down a rabbit hole with my parsing of the final five letters. No hints yet, but did others find this one tricky?
